Cold Steel Hide Out Review

You can’t not love Cold Steel. They make some odd, but often innovative knives, as well as super fun and cheesy videos. I never needed a Gladius machete but damn do I want one. Today we are going small, super small, and looking at Cold Steel’s Hide Out. The Hide Out is an ultra small neck knife designed as a last ditch weapon.

The Cold Steel Hide Out is designed for discreet carry. It’s easily worn and carried around the neck, or with an added loop it can be carried in an IWB position. The knife is inexpensive, and super lightweight. It’s also a formidable knife should you find yourself in a last ditch scenario. The Hide Out is my go to knife when I go for a run because it’s easy to carry and easy to use.

General Dimensions and Blade Details

The Hide Out has a 3 inch blade and a 3.5 inch handle for a knife that’s 6.5 inches long total. The Hide Out weighs a mere 1.9 ounces. The knife is made from Japanese AUS 8A stainless steel, and has a Kray Ex handle.

AUS 8A steel is an affordable steel that is certainly well suited for the Hide Out. AUS 8A is a heat treated steel, and it has excellent corrosion resistance. This is a must have since the knife sits against my sweating chest as I run. The steel itself is also very quick and easy to sharpen, but the downside is it will dull somewhat quickly. The steel itself is reported to be very strong and I have no reasons to think it isn’t.

The blade is a dagger design that ends with a sharp spear point. The blade is a V-grind and is quite attractive and evenly ground. The blade is extremely sharp from the factory and keeping the edge sharp is easy to do. Integrated right below the blade is a very small handguard. In a traditional fencing grip it’s not very useful, but it’s incredibly handy in an ice pick style grip.

The Hide Out is not designed as a working man’s knife and not exactly a tool designed for EDC. It’s a weapon designed for concealed carry. A dagger style blade also means its designed more for stabbing that slicing or cutting. That being said the handguard also acts as a point of leverage for your thumb and you can slice through most common materials if necessary.

The Hide Out is super simple and from a last ditch self-defense perspective that is all it needs to be. The blade is short enough to make it easy to handle and to make repeated stabs easy. The blade is pointy and sharp and needs no special techniques to use. Just point the stabby end at the bad guy and thrust it. It will most certainly get the point across.

Handle and Ergonomics

The handle is very thin, but long enough to fill your hand. The handle flares outward near the bottom and the Kray Ex coating makes it easy to grip and allows the user to easily draw the knife from a neck worn sheath. The long handle gives you an outstanding grip on the knife.

The handle is merely coated with Kray Ex, and the knife does have a full tang. Kray Ex rubber is a Cold Steel material they use for their grips. It’s soft and comfortable, but also heavily textured to provide a solid grip on the knife.

As I mentioned before the grip is exceptionally thin, but it’s easy to hold onto. It’s a valuable thing to have for a knife designed for self-protection. The handle’s Kray Ex coating makes it easy to grip, especially when it comes to wet and sweaty hands.

I’ve never needed to use it for actual self-defense, but I’ve practiced with it during runs and I’ve always been able to draw it without issue. The knife’s design means regardless of which side you grab it’s positioned for use and for an easy grab. Perfect for a defensive situation where there is no time to think about which way you are grabbing the knife.

Manipulating the Hide Out and cutting through cardboard was surprisingly easy to do. The handle gives you a lot of leverage and you can control the blade with very little effort. The handle is also very thin and it will wear on your hand while you work with the knife.

Sheath

The Hide Out sheath is molded kydex and is called Secure-Ex. The Secure-Ex sheath offers excellent retention for the Hide Out. It has four points of retention. Two on the front and two on the back. The blade is absolutely not coming out of the sheath without a sure tug.

The sheath is made from two polymer molded halves that are held together with 8 eyelets. These eyelets allow you to position your chain higher or lower for an easier reach depending on your size. I like to position it low enough for easy and quick access.

There are also four wider slots to weave webbing through if you so decide. Overall the sheath is top notch and it’s perfect for low profile carry. It seals the knife in and ensures it going nowhere even when being worn from the neck upside down.

Cold Steel Hide Out Review – Final Thoughts

The Hide Out is a super small, and affordable neck knife designed for concealed carry. It’s extremely convenient for daily carry and comfortable as well. As a design it’s simplicity makes it effective to employ and very easy to carry. The Cold Steel Hide Out retails for under 40 bucks and serves a niche purpose.

The Hide Out isn’t a good EDC knife and basically any mid-tier folder would be a better choice. The Hide Out is perfect for situations where your dress or activity doesn’t allow you to carry a traditional knife. It’s a neat design and as a weapon it serves its purpose. If you need a do it all knife choose something else, if you need a light and easy to carry weapon then the Hide Out is for you.

Cold Steel Bush Ranger Lite Review

Time to face it, fellow knife nerds – We’re living in an era of over-saturation. With so many companies releasing a deluge of new designs, it’s difficult to pluck the hits from the static. But after months of blade malaise, something interesting caught my eye – A cheap, rugged looking, aggressive green monster with a nifty locking mechanism. It’s the Cold Steel Bush Ranger Lite, a budget iteration of the company’s $200-plus outdoor original. After several months of testing, one thing’s for certain: Of all the Cold Steel knives I’ve handled, the Bush Ranger Lite is definitely the Cold Steel-iest.

General Dimensions and Blade Details

As you’d expect from a sub-$30 knife, Cold Steel has chosen fairly basic materials. The handle is comprised of 4.875-inches of Outdoor Green GFN, measuring more than half an inch thick (0.65”). The flat ground 8Cr13MoV blade features a satin finish along the length of its 3.5-inches, with a tallness of 1.75 and a thickness of 0.65, respectively. Overall length and weight sit at 8.375-inches and 4.8-ounces. The forward swedge flows gracefully into a bowie-style clip point, giving the Bush Ranger an elegantly aggressive appearance.

If these handle scales look familiar, you’re not wrong. The Bush Ranger’s outline is very similar to the Cold Steel Finn Wolf, a Scandi-ground folder I reviewed a couple years back. If you squint, these are almost the same knife. But while the Wolf’s grind lands it in the outdoors-only curriculum, the Bush Ranger’s mandate is decidedly more gen-ed.

But speaking of outdoor credentials, here’s an interesting note – The Bush Ranger Lite will strike a ferro rod. Even in a closed position, this pocket knife is more than capable of casting sparks. This is certainly safer than previous folders I’ve used to make fire, since I was always concerned about applying force to the back of the blade.

Handle, Ergonomics, and Pocket Clip

The Bush Ranger fits perfectly in my medium/large sized hand. The hook on the back end rests perfectly against the heel of my palm, creating a feeling of security. Balance is good, and at no point did I encounter any hotspots.

Despite the squared-off spine, the backside of the Bush Ranger’s blade provides a generous, comfortable place to rest your thumb. There are some rough edges on the underside of the GFN, but nothing out of bounds for this price range.

The pocket clip is small, tight, and unobtrusive. This is by no means a deep-carrying tool, but the clip performs adequately and disappears against my palm when the knife is in use. There’s no flat resting surface under the tongue, however. This means that your pocket seam will be slowly digested as it drags across the textured handle. Cold Steel has also opted for tip-up only carry, reversible to the left or right side. This, along with the lefty-friendly nature of the lock, makes this a truly ambidextrous knife.

As for the actual ride, the knife carries surprisingly, well, Lite. Don’t get me wrong – The footprint is massive. It shared my right front pocket with my wallet and pen, and there was no mistaking its presence. That being said, the airy nature of GFN made this an area problem only, not a question of mass. It was also surprisingly benign in daily activities, such as walking, sitting, and climbing ladders. At no point did I feel that the Bush Ranger limited my flexibility. Until reaching for my wallet, of course.

Deployment and Lockup

For the longest time, the keystone of the Cult of Lynn Thompson (h/t Advanced Knife Bro) has been the sacred Tri-Ad Lock. Of all the mechanisms in the hobby, this one seems to have the most fervent devotees. While the Bush Ranger Lite isn’t technically a member of the Tri-Ad tribe, it does boast another interesting innovation from Cold Steel – The Rocker Lock. That’s the sliding piece you see on the show side of the blade. Here’s a look at it stripped down to bare metal:

As the breakdown confirms, the Bush Ranger is lacking the signature stop pin of the Tri-Ad. However, the Rocker’s additional sliding stop adds a sense of solidity to the traditional back-lock mechanism.

I will say this – This knife benefited greatly from its initial disassembly and maintenance. It was noticeably stiff out of the box, running dry on its Teflon washers. Some cleaning and a little oil worked wonders, and the Bush Ranger became a much smoother operator. The CLACK its lock snapping into place is a mildly addictive sound.

Closing can be a bit trickier. Cold Steel’s locks are notorious for their stiffness, and this is no exception. And because of the lack of a forward finger choil, this is really a knife that requires two hands in order to close safely. Otherwise, you risk shaking that sharp edge down into you knuckle, which would only be exacerbated by the tendency of back-locks to snap shut with authority.
In daily use, I found this to be an eminently capable all-around cutter. From food prep to package duty, the Bush Ranger was a solid companion. But this is a Cold Steel, after all. So, what sort of tester would I be if I didn’t at least attempt to baton with it?

The surprise isn’t that the knife got stuck. I intentionally used a piece of wood that was larger than a pocket knife should be able to tackle. The shock was what happened after I hammered, pulled, and pried the Bush Ranger loose. I disengaged the rocker tab, pressed down the back-lock, and the knife closed as though nothing had happened. I opened and closed the knife several times, just to be sure I wasn’t losing my mind. Blade play? Zero. Centering? Dead-on. Not even so much as a roll on its 8Cr edge. The FRN handle held up to the prying as well, with no new gaps developing around the back spring.

Cold Steel Bush Ranger Lite Review – Final Thoughts

The Bush Ranger Lite is, without question, the toughest budget blade I’ve come across. It’s rugged, well built, and perfectly suitable for everyday abuse. And from a sheer bang-for-buck perspective, I’m not sure there’s another knife under $30 that gives you this much blade, handle, and versatility. Sure, the materials are basic and the design isn’t for everyone. And if you spend even part of your time in an office, it probably isn’t the blade to use in the break room. I certainly raise a few eyebrows when I pulled this clip-point monster out of my pocket.

But under almost any other circumstance, the Bush Ranger Lite is a heck of a tool. Buy one, beat the heck out of it, and get another if it breaks. Overall, I this is an outstanding budget effort from the cult of Cold Steel.

Cold Steel AD-10 Review

Of all the words used to describe Cold Steel knives here on BladeReviews.com, “refined” isn’t at the top of the list. That’s not a metaphor – I literally made a list, and “refined” only appears three times. You’re much more likely to see Cold Steel knives described with adjectives like “strong” (41 times), “large” (39 times; followed closely by “big” at 38), and “comfortable” (26).

Speaking as a former Cold Steel skeptic, I was unsurprised to find that the AD-10 is indeed strong, large (big), and comfortable. What did surprise me was just how good this knife is. It delivers the essence of Cold Steel, refined. It might be the best knife they’ve ever made. And if you, like me, ever scoffed at Cold Steel’s marketing or rolled your eyes at their product names, read on, because the AD-10 will catch you off guard.

General Dimensions & Blade Details

The proportions of this knife are deceptive. Yes, it’s big, but the wide handle, snubnosed blade, and protruding backspacer make it look even bigger – as if there’s another knife trapped in there, bulging through the seams trying to get out. Makes sense, considering the AD-10 is a downscaled version of designer Andrew Demko’s gargantuan 4-Max. Here it is filling out a Spyderco sandwich, between the longer Military and shorter Paramilitary 2:

The AD-10’s blade is clearly optimized for strength. The tip is wide, thick, and feels practically unbreakable. It penetrates more like an armor-piercing round than a needle, meaning it’ll get you into just about anything so long as you don’t care what kind of hole you leave behind. Behind the tip, the grind thins out quickly to a relatively thin edge thanks to a nicely executed hollow grind. Don’t let anyone tell you that thick knives can’t slice – the AD-10’s substantial 3.9mm blade stock and deep hollow grind work together like a zipper, holding material apart from the blade after the edge separates it. Compared to a full flat ground knife of similar stock thickness, the AD-10 carves through cardboard with noticeably less friction, powering through the nasty two- and three-ply stuff rather than getting wedged in.

There’s no avoiding the laws of physics, however: a hollow grind can only do so much for a knife this thick. It’s graceless in the kitchen, where the tip mashes more than it pierces, and crisp produce is split, not sliced. Then again, the AD-10 isn’t anyone’s idea of a kitchen knife. For more utilitarian cutting it works with surprising agility, despite looking like a wrecking ball.

The blade steel, S35VN, has performed well for me. Edge retention has been good; stainlessness, excellent. As for toughness, it did not disappoint. I took the AD-10 on a hike and ended up using it to trim back a bush that had overgrown the trail. A careless chop glanced into a stone, damaging the edge where it hit. Thankfully, the steel was tough enough to roll, not chip, so the damage was easy to sharpen out.

Handle, Ergonomics, & Pocket Clip

At just over three and a half inches long, I wouldn’t call the blade oversized. The handle, though, is another story. Even if you ignore the extended pommel, it still measures in at 5.25 inches. For perspective, that’s almost as much handle as the Spyderco Military, with about as much blade as the Para 2. Yeah. If you’re someone who obsesses over high blade:handle ratios, this isn’t your knife. To top it off, the AD-10 is bulky, too; easily eclipsing my heretofore thickest knife, the Victorinox Alox Farmer.

These comparisons aren’t complaints. Because the AD-10 is the most comfortable folding knife I’ve ever used. Andrew Demko is a master of ergonomics. You’d think a knife with this many finger grooves – plus a front and rear guard – would feel awkward to move around on, but the AD-10’s smooth and deeply sculpted handle isn’t so prescriptive that you feel locked in to any single grip.

The pocket clip is wide, polished, and barely noticeable in hand. The lock bar and backspacer leave no palm-pinching voids in the back of the handle. Every edge, every corner is shaped or softened. It all feels very purposeful, allowing you to exert more force with less strain – this is a knife that makes “hard use” feel easier. One ergonomic caveat: the forward finger choil might be a little cramped for thicker fingers, although I didn’t have any issues.

The unavoidable problem with a knife this fist-filling is how awkward it is to carry in a pocket. I mean, it’s 6.8 ounces and thicker than a coin purse on laundry day. I can deal with large knives (see my review of the Spyderco Hundred Pacer), but the AD-10 stretches (literally) the capacity of my pockets. If you wanted to carry it in your waistband, you’d probably need to buy bigger pants. Even though it hurts to suggest something so shamefully uncool, your best option might actually be a belt pouch.

Still, despite the weight and bulk, I’d pick the AD-10 for my pocket before any of the other Cold Steel folders I’ve owned. The clip – while it could use a little more “ramp” at the lip to help it over thick seams – is an improvement over the too-short, too-stiff, death grip clips I’ve struggled with in the past. And unlike the pocket rasps Cold Steel typically uses for handle scales, the smooth G10 on the AD-10 makes stowing and retrieving the knife a cinch.

Deployment & Lockup

At this point, Cold Steel’s Tri-Ad lock needs little introduction – it’s simply one of, if not the strongest locking system on the market today. What impresses me more than its absolute strength is its tolerance for abuse over time. Even if you were to impact it hard enough to deform the lock face, the built-in play around the lock bar pivot preserves solid lockup, by allowing the lock bar to reset itself against the stop pin. It’s clever engineering, but that play in the lock bar can sometimes make the Tri-Ad lock sticky and hard to disengage. Not so here: the AD-10 unlocks cleanly without the need for any break-in.

Ambidextrous thumbstuds and glassy smooth Teflon washers make for satisfying deployment, whether you open it slowly or with a quick flick. Closing it back up one-handed is a little counter-intuitive. So long as you don’t pull your fingers away from the heavy falling blade, they’ll safely catch the choil and not the edge, though thicker fingers should proceed with caution.

Cold Steel AD-10 Review – Final Thoughts

The AD-10 feels like the latest and greatest result of an ongoing evolution at Cold Steel. I can’t pinpoint when it started, exactly, but I started to take notice when they upgraded their blade steel across the board in 2015.

Ever since then, it seems like they’ve been taking the cheesy machismo that built the brand and distilling it into impressive products that do more than just tactical wish fulfillment (not that there’s anything wrong with that – I once owned a Rajah 2, after all). The AD-10 doubles down on what Cold Steel have always done well – big, brash, and strong – but doesn’t swagger over the little details. It’s not a knife I can always carry, but definitely one I enjoy using when I do. If your pockets will stretch for it, you won’t find a more capable and comfortable folder at this price point.

Cold Steel Pro Lite Sport Review

Today we are taking a trip to value town. It has been a long time since I reviewed a sub $25.00 pocket knife, and as of the day of publication, the Cold Steel Pro Lite Sport is closer to $20 than $25.

Ben reviewed the original Pro Lite back in 2016, and as usual he did a great job. But as an unabashed Cold Steel Fanboy, part of me wanted to sample this vintage for myself. So when Cold Steel introduced the “Sport” version of the knife with a thumb hole, I decided to buy one for review.

And I’m glad I bought one. For under $25 this may be the most solid utility folder I’ve ever owned. It’s another Andrew Demko design for Cold Steel, but it’s at a price point even non-knife people can appreciate.

General Dimensions and Blade Details

The Pro Lite Sport has an overall length of 8.00″, a 3.5″ blade, a weight of 3.2 ounces, and is made in Taiwan. As usual, Cold Steel has produced a larger knife, but the Pro Lite Sport feel smaller than some of their knives I’ve recently reviewed.

I think it’s a great size for those who can carry a larger utility knife. Personally, my day job is serving as a small town lawyer, so I’ve used mine as a “nights and weekends” carry. It has worked well in that regard. I’ve taken the knife fishing a number of times, and it’s worked well as a fishing knife. It’s robust and inexpensive, so I don’t mind exposing it to salt water, cut bait, etc. It’s a nice choice for dirty jobs.

Here is a shot of it next to my Medium Voyager, a smaller Cold Steel blade:

The Pro Lite Sport has a primitive looking drop point blade. The oval thumb hole and prominant “beak” to the blade reminds me of the profile of a prehistoric animal. The unique profile has been given a partial hollow grind, swedge, and stonewashed finish. The edge bevels on my knife are almost completely even, and the edge terminates in a stout tip. The only sign that this is a budget blade is some light machining marks on the spine and inside the thumb oval.

The steel chosen for the blade is Krup 4116. This is a stainless steel that I don’t have a ton of experience with. ZKnives offers his chemical composition and a nice description of the steel.

Krup 4116 is a carbon steel manufactured by German company thyssenkrupp, and is the same steel found in many Henckels and Wustof knives. I own a Wustof paring knife that I use daily, so maybe I have more experience with this steel then I realize.

In my experience Krup 4116 is one of those easy to sharpen steels that won’t hold an edge forever, but is forgiving and easy to maintain. Sort of like 440C or AUS-8, but according to Z-Knives this is a little closer to 420HC.

Whatever it is, Cold Steel has done a good job with the heat treat. It came shaving sharp out of the box, and I’ve put it to work breaking down boxes, opening mail, slicing fruit, and taken it fishing a few times.

I’ve gotten into espresso lately, which means I’ve ordered all sorts of crazy espresso making supplies, and have transformed a corner of our kitchen into a low grade food sciences laboratory. Lots of boxes in the mail, and I’ve been using the Pro-Lite to break them down. The edge slows down after a few boxes, but it only takes a few swipes on my Golden Stone to bring it back to sharp. This is the kind of steel that is so easy to sharpen you can feel it get sharper on the stone.

As usual for Cold Steel, it’s a superb knife to cut with. Handles well and cuts great. No rust or corrosion either. No complaints.

Handle, Ergonomics, and Pocket Clip

The handles of the Pro Lite Sport are made of linerless high density plastic. This is a lock back knife, but there is a small integral plastic backspacer on the last third of the handle. Construction is screw together. Fit and finish is excellent. All the parts line up and there are no sharp edges to the handle. The result is a lightweight and durable handle.

An obvious comparison would be with the Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter, but there is no comparison. Compared with the Pro Lite, the Dozier Folding Hunter feels like a light duty toy that could break in half at any moment. Don’t get me wrong, the Folding Hunter is a fine light duty tool, but there is no comparison when it comes to the strength of these two knives. With the Pro Lite there is little flex when I try to squeeze the handles together. About as much flex as you would see on one of their linerless G-10 handled knives. The build quality is impressive.

The ergonomics are excellent. This generous handle is simple and will accommodate a wide range of hand sizes. It takes to my paw like a duck to water. The handles are lightly textured, and there is a run of wide jimping along the back of the handle. This offers good traction and tactile feedback without being overly obnoxious. The handle is comfortable in forward and reverse grips. No complaints.

The pocket clip is a stout stainless steel spring clip. The handles are drilled and tapped for ambidextrous tip up carry, and there are recesses in the handle for the pocket clip to slot into. The clip isn’t going anywhere, and it offers good spring retention.

The Pro Lite Sport performs admirably in the pocket. The clip is pretty deep, burying 90% of the knife in your pocket. The knife is lightweight and the handle is relatively thin. It’s thicker than my Code 4, but much thinner than the chunky Voyager. At just over 3 ounces it carries wonderfully.

Deployment and Lockup

The biggest difference between the original Pro Lite and this Pro Lite Sport is the use of a thumb hole instead of the thumb stud that appears on the original model. Cold Steel does a good job with their thumb studs, and Ben seemed to like the ones included on his Pro Lite, but there is a certain elegance and practicality to the thumb hole that is hard to ignore. The thumb hole is readily accessible, and it’s easy to open this knife with your thumb.

The action is relatively fluid and smooth. The washers are made of teflon. I prefer phosphor bronze washers, as they are smoother and more durable, but for a sub $25 knife you are going to get some compromises. This is one of those compromises. Personally I think the action is good enough for government work, although in a perfect world we would have phosphor bronze washers here.

For lockup we of course have a Tri-Ad lock. That almost goes without saying as the lock appears on almost all of Cold Steel’s folding knives. And once again that Tri-Ad lock performs admirably. For the uninitiated, the Tri-Ad lock is an improved back lock. It’s a proven lock design, and is arguably the toughest lock on the market today.

Even though this is a plastic handled knife, I cannot muscle out any blade play. It’s rock solid. As usual, the lock bar is strong. So if you aren’t used to Tri-Ad lock knives you are going to want to include a grip strength tool with your order to bulk up the muscles in your hand. But for those familiar with this style of lock it offers a level of security that only a Tri-Ad lock can bring. Granted, I’m not doing anything crazy with any of my folding knives, but I wouldn’t hesitate to use this knife for any difficult task.

While something like the Dozier Folding Hunter is a decidedly “light duty” blade, this Pro Lite will handle chores like hard carving, and crunch cutting thick rope without protest. On that note, I wish I had my Dozier Folding Hunter handy for a size comparison, but couldn’t find it for this review.

Cold Steel Pro Lite Sport Review – Final Thoughts

I think the Pro Lite Sport is my favorite sub $25 folder. It’s a rock solid performer and it packs a ton of value. I think Cold Steel allocated their limited budget appropriately. The design is great, and they selected appropriate materials. I would prefer to see the teflon washers replaced with phosphor bronze. It may raise the price slightly, but I think it would be worthwhile. Beyond that, I find it hard to complain about this knife.

If you are looking for a lightweight, tough, and inexpensive knife, then look no further. I haven’t reviewed a knife that has provided this much bang for your buck in a while. My favorite sub $40 folder is the ESEE Zancudo, and that continues to be an excellent knife. It is a better choice for urban EDC thanks to it’s smaller profile. It’s also ~$10 more.

But if you want a no-nonsense work knife, then the Pro Lite Sport gets the nod. If offers an amazing bang for your buck. At this price they make nice gifts, and are cheap enough to keep as a dedicated tackle box knife, or a truck knife, etc. I think the Pro Lite Sport is a great inexpensive folding knife and I highly recommend it.

Cold Steel Golden Eye Review

One visitor to the site commented that we are “a little biased towards Spyderco”. It’s probably because we have reviewed a lot of Spyderco knives over the years. More than any other brand. I like Spydercos and so does Ben, Grayson, Josh, and pretty much everyone who has written for the site. We all like their knives and consequently Spyderco has gotten a ton of air time over the years. If reviewing Spyderco knives is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

Perhaps more controversial is my attraction to Cold Steel Knives. I have reviewed a bunch of them over the years. I’m a big fan, although most of them are too big and impractical for me to truly carry and use. I think I may have a fetish because none of the other authors appear to share the desire to review C.S. stuff. Ben reviewed the Large Espada and the Pro-Lite, so I suspect he may also have a little Lynn Thompson in him, and Chad reviewed the Kudu, but that’s it.

Me? I’ve reviewed 15 Cold Steel knives. 16 if you include this Golden Eye. Yeah… that’s an addiction. I blame it mostly on their excellent marketing videos. Also Cold Steel keeps coming out with stuff I want to review. Andrew Demko keeps turning out hits, and I keep buying them. The Golden Eye is no exception. It looked cool, and slightly different from the other Cold Steel knives with it’s golden thumb hole. Had to have it. Sorry (not sorry).

General Dimensions and Blade Details

For some reason I thought the Golden Eye would be smaller. Maybe that’s because Tony wrote a quick review on it a few years back, and he typically picks out smaller more practical knives. Who knows. This is not a small knife. It has an overall length of 8.375″, a 3.5″ blade, and weighs 4.3 ounces. It’s made in Taiwan like most of Cold Steel’s other folders.

This is a bigger knife. The handle in particular is pretty large, but that’s OK as we will soon learn it is comfortable. That said, it feels light for its size and will make a great work knife. Not a great urban EDC option.

The blade is a big beautiful drop point. The overall profile reminds me of the Terzoula Slipit with its angled thumb ramp extending into a swedged drop point blade. It’s the kind of no-nonsense blade shape that will serve you well in virtually any task. The blade is ground thin with a deep hollow grind, has been given a two-tone satin finish, and is finished with a neat and evenly applied edge.

Cold Steel selected S35VN for this knife. These days the vast majority of their premium folders come in S35VN, replacing CTS-XHP, which replaced AUS-8. S35VN should need little introduction at this point. It is an American made steel designed as a follow up to S30V. It is specifically formulated for knife steels and is great stuff. It takes a good edge, has good edge retention, doesn’t rust or stain easily, finishes nicely, is reasonably tough, yet is easy to sharpen. It’s an excellent blade steel.

And the S35VN really sings on the Golden Eye. I was borderline shocked with how well this knife performed. It slices cardboard with aplomb. It absolutely zips through the stuff. No issues with rope. Great for slicing fruit and other work in the kitchen as well. This is a sturdy knife but it’s ground to slice and has performed phenomenally well in my use and testing.

I’ve been touching up the Golden Eye on my [easyazon_link identifier=”B001JL1I6Y” locale=”US” tag=”brdfkdfk-20″]Spyderco Golden Stone[/easyazon_link], and the edge stays freaky sharp that way. Must be all the gold. No complaints with the blade or blade steel on this knife.

Handle, Ergonomics, and Pocket Clip

The Golden Eye uses Cold Steel’s tried n’ true method of thick linerless G-10 handle scales. I’ve reviewed many of their knives with similar construction, and this knife works just as well as the others. The G-10 is thick and sturdy. There is very little flex when you try to squeeze the handle slabs together.

Fit and finish on the handle is excellent. Everything has been neatly finished. The parts are all flush and the handle screws together so the knife can be taken apart and maintained. The choice of forest green for the handles is a nice touch. It’s a little different without being too far out there, and contrasts with the gold hardware.

I wasn’t sure how the ergonomics would be on the Golden Eye. I guess that’s true for every knife I order, but the Golden Eye in particular had me guessing thanks to the multiple finger scallops. Complicated finger grooves can be a mistake if they force your hand into an awkward position. Here the groves are generous. They feel comfortable and work well for me. I think that most people will find this knife comfortable to use, but I haven’t taken a poll on this. Let me know in the comments section if you have this knife but don’t like the way it feels in hand. Personally, I’m a fan.

In addition to the finger grooves you have peel ply G10 for grip, and some light jimping along the back of the handle. These features provide a good amount of texture without going over the top. Overall I find this to be a comfortable knife to hold in forward and reverse grips. I’ve used this knife extensively and find it to be comfortable to cut with.

The Golden Eye comes with a large gold colored pocket clip and is configured for ambidextrous tip up carry. The clip appears to be designed for strength. You have milled recesses in the handle for the clip along with 3 screws. Spring strength is excellent and the knife is kept firmly in place.

In the pocket the Golden Eye carries well for what it is. It’s a bigger knife, so I tend to notice it, but it’s also a thin handled knife and it’s relatively light for its size. Not a boat anchor, but not a feather either. The strong clip keeps the knife firmly in place. All said I think the Golden Eye behaves nicely in the pocket for a larger knife.

Deployment and Lockup

This knife uses a stepped thumb hole to get the blade open. Cold Steel calls this the “Hollow Thumb Ramp” (HTR), and that acronym is pretty accurate. In practice the HTR works well and is a cool idea. It’s kind of a hybrid between a thumb hole and thumb stud. There is a lot for your thumb to grab onto, and this knife can be opened with gloves as well. The serrated thumb hole is held in place with a set screw, which is kind of interesting. It’s a nice design and one I wouldn’t mind seeing on more knives.

It’s worth noting that the gold plating on the thumb hole has worn off. I bought this knife off BladeForums in “Like New” condition, and it clearly was not like new. Disappointing, but given the price I paid and the fact I was going to use this knife I ultimately decided to keep it. However, the pictures you see here demonstrate that the gold finish is subject to wear.

The action of this knife is smooth thanks to a large pivot and phosphor bronze washers. Like most Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock knives, a good amount of force is required to open and shut the blade. This isn’t a blade you will be able to flick open. But you will find the action to be smooth and reliable, and that’s what I would expect from a rugged utility knife like this.

For lockup we have the aforementioned Tri-Ad lock. I’ve reviewed a dozen or so knives featuring this knife of lock, so forgive me if this sounds a little repetitive, but the Tri-Ad lock is a lock back reinforced with a stop pin. It’s an extremely strong lock design. The Tri-ad lock on the Golden Eye knife is no exception. You can’t muscle blade play out of this even if you try to move the blade out at the tip.

Disengaging the lock requires a good amount of force, but it’s not as bad as something like the 4-Max. Actually, I find the amount of effort it takes to open and close this knife to be reasonable. That said, this knife has been used quite a bit. Out of the box these can be stiff to open and close, so you may need to break your knife in.

Cold Steel Golden Eye Review – Final Thoughts

Cold Steel has done it again. This is a strong and practical utility knife. It handles well, cuts like a beast, and features the strongest lock on the market. The “Golden Eye” (Hollow Thumb Ramp) works great. The HTR combined with the unique profile, gold hardware, and green handles help distinguish this knife in Cold Steel’s lineup. With so many great Demko designs on Cold Steel’s roster you would think that they cannibalize each other. The Golden Eye is a unique knife, even if it follows Cold Steel’s formula in many ways.

Where the knife may fall short is that this is another large folding knife from Cold Steel. It’s a great performer if you can carry and use this knife, but this isn’t a knife I can pull out at the office or the grocery store. It’s just too big. If I worked on a ranch or something this would be a great choice, but as a mild-mannered couch commando I usually carry a smaller knife. Also, the finger scallops in the handle won’t work for everyone.

That said, I found this to be an impressive knife. Especially the way it cuts. It’s a joy to cut things with this knife. Andrew Demko knows what he is doing and Cold Steel has a track record of executing his designs to brilliant standards. The Golden Eye is no different. Well worth seeking out if you like the design or are an unabashed Cold Steel fan like me.

Cold Steel 4-Max Review

This is a knife that requires little in the way of an introduction. The Cold Steel 4-Max is arguably the most overbuilt hard use folding knife of all time. Modeled after designer Andrew Demko’s custom 4-Max folder the 4-Max brings Andrew’s clean design and attention to detail to life.

This isn’t your garden variety Cold Steel offering. Built in the USA and retailing for about $400, this high end production offering is for those that want to get as close to an Andrew Demko custom as they can without buying and actual AD custom. I’ve wanted to check one of these knives out ever since they announced the project in 2014. 4 years later and I finally have one in hand.

Will the knife survive the hype? Read on to find out.

General Dimensions and Blade Details

The 4-Max has an overall length of 10.00″, a 4.00″ blade and weighs 10.2 ounces. This is a big honking knife. As you will be able to see in the size comparisons, if the Ultimate Hunter is a great white, then this 4Max is a megalodon. It dwarfs normal folding knives. It’s almost a caricature of a folding knife. It’s massive in every way. Some may view a knife this big as novelty item rather than an EDC. Personally, I like mine for trips to the supermaket and high stakes hostage negotiations.

My 4-Max is made in the USA, but Cold Steel has moved manufacturing over to Italy. They changed the G-10 from the tan shown here to a blue grey on the Italian version. Personally, part of the allure of the 4Max to me was that it was made in the USA. It’s a knife so ridiculous that it almost needs to be made in the USA. Otherwise it’s just an imposter. That said, my research shows the Italian 4Max is very nice, and possibly even a smidge better than this USA version in the fit and finish department.

The blade on this sucker is massive. It’s a simple drop point with a deep belly, high flat grind, and decorative swedge. The grinds are crisp and even. The edge has been evenly applied, although the sharpener did run up onto the choil a little. That seems to be consistent from knife to knife. I’m not a fan of how that looks, and is one of my gripes.

You would think a knife this overbuilt would be a poor slicer, but the 4-Max actually has great blade geometry. It slices beautifully thanks to the high flat grind that gets surprisingly thin behind the edge. I can slice apples like nobody’s business with the 4Max. The tip also displays a good balance between strength and practicality. It’s stout, but isn’t a pry bar either. The knife is fully functional and surprisingly good at performing day to day tasks.

For blade steel Cold Steel went with CPM-20CV. CPM-20CV is Crucible’s answer to Boeller M390. It’s excellent stuff providing a covetable blend of edge retention, ease of sharpness, corrosion resistance and toughness. It’s a high end steel. So far it has done everything I’ve asked it to. Admittedly that has mostly been EDC chores including breaking down boxes, cutting fruit, and opening mail. I’m keeping this knife for long term evaluation and will update this section periodically.

Handle, Ergonomics, and Pocket Clip

The Handle of the 4-Max is G-10 over titanium liners with a titanium backspacer. Handle construction is solid. The G-10 scales have been nicely finished. All the parts line up, and the overall impression is solid.

So far the tan G-10 has held up well. I’m not a huge fan of light colored G-10 as it tends to pick up dirt and stain, but I haven’t had that issue with the 4-Max.

The ergonomics of the 4-Max are excellent. This is a huge knife, so there is plenty of real estate, and Andrew Demko is well known for his simple and ergonomic designs that accommodate a variety of grips and hand sizes. The ergonomic features include a generous forward finger choil, lightly textured G-10 handle scales, and a short run of toothy jimping. The jimping is nice because it captures the pad of your thumb without being overly aggressive.

All the edges of the G-10 have been chamferred. I haven’t noticed any hot spots. The balance point of the knife is an inch or so behind the pivot, so it has a forward heavy feel. It all but begs to be chopped with, an odd sensation from a folding knife. The pommel is large and angular and could be used as an “impact tool” if the need ever arised. The 4-Max is also comfortable in a reverse grip.

Time to talk about the pocket clip. This is a large titanium pocket clip. It allows for right or left side tip up carry only. It’s not a deep carry clip, but it’s oriented so that the knife buries fairly deep in the pocket. Spring retention is excellent.

In practice, this knife carries as you would expect. You need to wear a belt while EDCing the 4-Max, lest you wish to arrive at your destination in just your underwear. It’s big, it’s heavy, and it takes up a ton of space in your pocket. I wouldn’t turn up my nose at a belt sheath for this one.

Deployment and Lockup

The 4-Max makes use of large ambidextrous thumb studs. Quite a bit of travel is required to pop this blade open. Thankfully the going is smooth due to the massive phosphor bronze washers. When you finally maneuver the blade into the open position you are greeted with a hugely satisfying “click”. It’s kind of like closing the door of a German car.

For lockup we have an oversized Tri-Ad lock. It’s got a stop pin bigger than most pivots. Lockup is absolutely bank vault solid. Not a smidge of play here, and according to Cold Steel this lock can handle ungodly amounts of punishment. No complaints with respect to the lock.

Where I do have a complaint is when it’s time to unlock the knife. Tri-Ad locks can have a reputation for being tough to disengage, but this 4-Max takes it to a new level. Not only is a good amount of pressure required to release the blade (understandable), you have to position your thumb dead center on the lock release. If you travel too far forward or back, you won’t have sufficient travel for the lockbar to raise enough to disengage.

Once you get the lock disengaged extreme care needs to be taken with this blade. The spring tension turns the 4-Max into a guillotine of sorts. Care always needs to be exercised when closing a folding knife, but extreme care should be taken with the 4-Max. The combination of strong spring, heavy blade, and razor sharp blade make this one a little disconcerting to use. I’ve never felt nervous closing a pocket knife before, but after catching the edge of my ring finger in this blade I have a new level of respect for the 4-Max. Be careful.

Blade centering is good, but not great on my knife. It’s a mm or so off. No where near rubbing, but at this price point I would obviously prefer something dead centered.

Cold Steel 4-Max Review – Final Thoughts

The 4-Max is the closest most of us will come to ever owning an Andrew Demko custom knife. It was built without compromise, and in that respect the 4-Max is a roaring success. If you are looking for the biggest, baddest hard use folding knife on the planet then I think the 4-Max should be at the top of your short list. It’s beautifully made, and it cuts surprisingly well. And I challenge you to find a more solid folding knife.

My biggest gripe is it’s a tough lock to disengage. Not only is there a lot of spring tension, you have to place your thumb right in the center in order to successfully disengage the lock.

However, if you are looking for anything resembling a practical pocket knife for urban EDC then I think you should look elsewhere. This knife is huge and heavy. No way I would want to carry it around on a daily basis. But it’s a beautiful and unique piece and I appreciate it for what it is.

With the 4-Max, you are either going to love the idea of it or hate it. If you are somehow on the fence about the 4-Max I would suggest picking one up. It’s not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
