What is EDC?

EDC or Every Day Carry stands for the items you carry with you every day. If you are new to the concept to EDC then welcome to a whole new world of personal utility. There are a lot of interesting items that people carry with them every day, and I’ll briefly touch on them here. Of course, being BladeReviews.com I’m most excited about EDC knives and I have a large selection of EDC knife reviews for you to consider.

But if you are still interested in learning a little more about what people like to carry every day, lets consider my own EDC, and maybe it can give you some ideas for your own carry system.

Cell Phones

For most people this is one of their most important pieces of kit. I’m far from a cell phone expert, so lets move on. (But in case you were wondering, as of 2019 I carry a [easyazon_link identifier=”B07FS3RNFJ” locale=”US” tag=”brdfkdfk-20″]Samsung Galaxy J7[/easyazon_link] with an Otterbox case.)

Wallets

Ah wallets, this is where it starts to get interesting. Money clip? Billfold? Trifold? Slim wallet? Credit card holder? There are actually a ton of great options out there if you are looking to maximize the EDC potential of your cards and cash. Personally, I like one of those ultra thin wallets from BigSkinny.

Key Chains

I just use a simple split ring and fob that matches my truck, but you can use all kinds of cool stuff like carabiners and various snap swivels. One interesting idea is an aircraft cable. LuckyLine makes some for sale on Amazon but I’ve seen some at the hardware store and even the automotive section of Wal-Mart.

Knives

Well if you are looking for EDC Knives then you have come to the right place. I have carried and reviewed dozens of EDC Knives. If you are looking for reviews head here. If you want to read a little more on what I look for in an EDC knife then head on over here.

Flashlights

Ah, EDC flashlights. I could almost start another website entirely dedicated to this topic. I’m no expert but I do own a couple flashlights that I carry every day. I carry a Quark AA2 Tactical (review forthcoming… eventually) and a 4Sevens Preon 2. Both are real solid. The Preon 2 strikes me as the perfect EDC light because it’s bright, small and only takes 2 AAA batteries.

Multi Tools

I’m not a huge multi tool guy, but I know some people can’t exist with some sort of Leatherman strapped to their side. I like to go a minimalist route, and for the longest time only carried a knife with me. But I really liked having a bottle opener, and a little prybar would be cool, and a pair of screwdrivers would be really nice. But who wants to carry all that crap with them? Well, I do, now that I found out about the Gerber Shard. I’ll do a full review on this thing eventually, but in my opinion this is a very solid multi tool to have on your keychain. I love mine.

Firearms

For many, a firearm is an essential piece of their EDC. This isn’t a firearms site, I won’t even pretend to be an expert, but there is a whole world of guns and accessories designed to be easily concealed and marketed towards people who own their concealed carry permits. It goes without saying you will want to observe ALL state, federal and local laws when contemplating carrying a firearm, but I just wanted to mention it since it is such a critical piece of gear for some.

Other Gear… and Beyond

Sunglasses, watches, handkerchiefs, jewlery (functional or otherwise), portable hard drives, flash drives, the list goes on and on and on. The sky is the limit when it comes to your personal EDC. I couldn’t possibly suggest or cover it all.

So where should you go next for all things EDC? Well, for EDC knives obviously I think the page on my site is worth browsing, but if you want a little more I have a couple recommendations. First of all, you have my friend Tony’s blog EveryDayCommentary.com. This is a great site with a lot of information on interesting EDC products (and great commentary of course). Another fascinating blog is everyday-carry.com. This place is practically a legend in the EDC circles, and for good reason. The premise is simple, people submit photographs and descriptions of their EDC, and editor Bernard posts it up with some of his thoughts, careful, this site is highly addictive. You have been warned. And if you like to do the forum thing I suggest the EDC Forums.

Final Thoughts

What do you like to carry? Is there a piece of EDC gear you would like me to review? Any other general comments? Let me know in the comments section below.

Dan, First just wanted to say I found this article by accident. Its very good and wish it was easier to find-I don’t see a link anywhere on this site.
Re EDC wallets, Big Skinny is great but I really like Rainbow of California:
    http://www.rainbowofcalifornia.com/
Their prices are ridiculously low, quality superb and I think they have a better product.
For example I was looking for a wallet to hold a key. While BigSkinny did, the ring was outside the wallet. Rainbow has a key ring inside with a zippered pocket for change. Check them out.

      Hi Steve,

Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the article. I link to this page from my “Edc Knives” page. It’s kind of a strange post so I am not sure where else to put it.

Thanks for letting me know about Rainbow. Looks like they have some interesting wallets in there. I might have to pick one up. I will say I’ve been happy with my Big Skinny Wallet. It is still holding up well after a couple years of daily carry and use.

      Best,

      Dan
